Victoria may challenge gambling limit
2011-05-30 10:24:44

VICTORIA will consider challenging the Federal Government in the High Court over plans to force gamblers to place a limit on how much they stake on clay poker chip machines.

The introduction of mandatory pre-commitment technology for poker machines across Australia was part of a Federal government deal with independent MP Andrew Wilkie.

The Victorian Government wants to introduce voluntary pre-commitment technology on all its gaming machines.

Consumer Affairs Minister Michael O'Brien said it opposed the Federal Government's plans to make use of the equipment mandatory.

"The Victorian Government had a very clear policy that it took to the people at the last election, Mr O'Brien said.

"We believe that pre-commitment technology should be available on every gaming machine in Victoria, but the choice to use that technology must be with the player."

He said the Government would consider taking the matter to the High Court.

"If the Federal Government tries to derail Victoria's policy that we were elected on, that we have a mandate on, we will consider every option to ensure the integrity of our policy," he said.

"That may include a High Court challenge."

In its budget earlier this month, the Victorian Government predicted taxes from Poker Chips machines would deliver $1.031 billion to the state's coffers next financial year.
